Frogs Under the Waterfront

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Last night I went to Frogs Under the Waterfront, a performance of Aristophanes’ The Frogs (οἱ βάτραχοι) mostly in boats underneath the Wellington waterfront run as part of the Fringe Festival. I was pretty sceptical of the concept going in, but it came off pretty well.

It was raining a little, but only the first twenty minutes or so is really outside, the rest is underneath the wharf, so that wasn’t much of a problem. The performances themselves are mostly static with the boats moored in front of makeshift stages (as best as possible; you’re in the pedalboats from the lagoon, and occasionally you’d have to do a little work to keep in place). The play is a comedy, and it manages to keep that going with contemporary references as well as the classics. My friends the classicists enjoyed it too, so it counts as culture.

The original season has sold out, but the programme handed out lists a return season Monday 2nd-Saturday 7th March with tickets from Downstage. It’s definitely worth going to if you can.

Freshen 3.0.10

Monday, February 9th, 2009

There’s a new Freshen release out (should be accessible in the store in about two hours). This is a bugfix-only release, cleaning up some niggles around settings updating.

`Freshen -m Freshen` will do the job once it’s in the store, or `Compile–3.0.10–recipe.tar.bz2` if you can’t wait. It is a recommended update and won’t break any existing behaviours.

urunner 0.2

Now with inotify! When available, urunnerd will now use inotify rather than just polling the directory every so often. That means it should generally respond faster to new tasks, and I guess wake up slightly less.

In the event of a task ending from SIGUSR1 (try again later), it will temporarily enter polling mode so the task will be retried soon. When all tasks have completed and been deleted, it reverts back to inotify monitoring.

There are a few other small fixes, scattered about, and it can still be built on non-inotify systems with `make NO_INOTIFY=1`. The same lack of warranty applies, but it does work for me. New tarball is up:
